The Light That Always Finds Its Way Home

An ancient journey. A thousand lights. One timeless reminder that even the longest darkness cannot extinguish the light within us. There is something extraordinary about a single flame. It is small, fragile, and seemingly insignificant against the vastness of darkness. Yet, the moment it is lit, everything around it begins to change. Perhaps that is why, for thousands of years, people across India and around the world have celebrated Diwali - the Festival of Lights.

But beyond the magnificent celebrations, colourful rangoli, glowing diyas, beautiful clothing, sweets, and gatherings with loved ones, Diwali carries a story that continues to speak to the human heart. It is a story of love, exile, courage, sacrifice, homecoming, and the eternal triumph of light over darkness.

The Story of Rama: When a Kingdom Waited for the Light

Long ago, in the ancient Indian epic Ramayana, Prince Rama of Ayodhya was sent into exile for fourteen years. He left behind his kingdom, his royal comforts, and the life that had been promised to him. Accompanying him were his beloved wife, Sita, and his devoted brother, Lakshmana. Their journey would become one of the most celebrated stories in Indian civilisation.

During their exile, Sita was abducted by Ravana, the powerful king of Lanka. What followed was an extraordinary struggle involving courage, devotion, loyalty, and the assistance of Hanuman and an army of allies.

Ultimately, Rama defeated Ravana, rescued Sita, and completed his years of exile. But perhaps the most beautiful part of the story was still to come.

The journey home.

According to a beloved Diwali tradition, when Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana returned to Ayodhya, the people illuminated their homes and streets with countless oil lamps to welcome them. Imagine an entire kingdom glowing with thousands upon thousands of tiny flames. Not simply to celebrate a prince returning to his throne, but to welcome hope, righteousness, and light back into their lives.

That image remains one of the most enduring symbols of Diwali.

A single diya became a thousand.

A thousand became a city of light.

And a story from the ancient world became a celebration that continues to illuminate millions of homes today.

More Than a Festival of Lights

Diwali is not celebrated in exactly the same way everywhere. Across India's diverse regions and communities, it carries different traditions and sacred stories. For many, the festival honours Goddess Lakshmi, associated with prosperity, abundance, and good fortune. In parts of eastern India, Kali Puja celebrates Goddess Kali. Other traditions remember Lord Krishna's victory over Narakasura. For Jains, Diwali commemorates the liberation, or moksha, of Lord Mahavira. Sikh celebrations around this season include Bandi Chhor Divas, commemorating the release of Guru Hargobind. These traditions are distinct, yet together they reveal the extraordinary cultural richness surrounding this season.

Diwali is not one story told by everyone. It is a constellation of stories, each carrying its own light.

The Light We Carry Within

Perhaps the greatest beauty of Diwali is that its message reaches far beyond temples, traditions, and celebrations. Every one of us experiences periods of darkness. There are moments of uncertainty, separation, disappointment, and loss. Times when the road ahead seems impossibly long and the destination feels out of reach. The journey of Rama reminds us that even the longest exile eventually comes to an end. That courage is not the absence of hardship. That love and loyalty can sustain us through extraordinary challenges. And that returning home is not always about arriving at a physical place.

Sometimes, home is a person.

Sometimes, it is peace.

Sometimes, it is rediscovering the light within ourselves.

A Celebration of Love, Togetherness and New Beginnings

Today, Diwali brings families, friends, and communities together across continents. Homes glow with candles and diyas. Doorways welcome guests. Rangoli transforms ordinary spaces into works of art. Food is shared, gifts are exchanged, and blessings are offered. Yet the most precious light is not found in the grandest decoration or the brightest celebration. It is found in the warmth of a shared moment.

In the kindness we extend to others.

In forgiveness, gratitude, generosity, and love.

And in the people who make our lives brighter simply by being part of them.

From Our Hearts to Yours

As we celebrate Diwali, we are reminded that light becomes even more beautiful when it is shared. May this festival bring peace where there has been uncertainty, hope where there has been difficulty, and joy where it is needed most. May our homes be filled with laughter, our hearts with compassion, and our lives with meaningful connections. And may we always remember that no matter how dark the world may sometimes seem, even the smallest flame has the power to illuminate the way forward.

Because the true miracle of Diwali is that we remind one another how to shine.

Wishing you and your loved ones a beautiful, peaceful, and luminous Diwali.

With love and light,

Sam & Zlatko
